Water Aerobics

Water aerobics classes are swim workouts performed in a swimming pool and usually do not require the participants to swim any swimming strokes.

The classes usually incorporate some lively music and a variety of water exercises that would usually be performed in land, such as walking and running in various directions. Pool based aerobics classes might also include jumping, arm techniques with floatation devices and mimiking a ski slalom movements.

The main benefit of a pool workout of this type is the support of the water on the body which reduces the risk of injury to the joints and muscles. Stretching is also made easier as the floataion and buoyancy allow a greater range of movement though the limbs and joints. These types of pool workout are suitable for non swimmers, as the head remains out of the water and feet remain on the pool floor thoughout, which also makes them safe for the elderly. Water exercises such as these expend more energy than similar exercises performed on land, but the speed of movement is greatly reduced due to the resistance of the water. For this reason, this type of pool based class will not burn as many calories as other types of swimming exercise, although water aerobics still provide good cardiovascular workouts.
