Freestyle Swimming Technique
Frequently Asked Questions
I want to learn freestyle swimming for exercise, but I don't know how to do freestyle breathing technique. What is the best way to practice breathing?
Freestyle breathing technique is affected by many factors: fitness level, body position and arm and leg technique. Freestyle has to be smooth and efficient and all of the above affect the efficiency of the stroke, which in turn affect the breathing.
Key things to ensure:
Ensure you breathe out while you swim and not hold your breath.
Relax during the stroke and don't swim too fast to begin with - that leads to poor efficiency and a lack of breath.
Make sure you have correct body position and excellent arm and leg technique. Inefficiency in any of these areas will result in a lack of breath.
Our best selling book, The Complete Guide to Front Crawl contains 22 separate basic exercises to help improve each individual component part of your front crawl technique - all with focus points and diagrams. You can download it as an eBook or buy it from Amazon.
